Checking Mail

How do I change how I receive my email?

There are three ways you can receive email through Mailshell: using the website, at a forwarding address, or using a desktop client like Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Messenger. (Using a desktop client is available only with the Premium Service.)

If you are not currently using the website but would like to, all you need to do is change your delivery settings to save in folders. You can just save everything in your Inbox, or, if you like, create folders to organize your email.

If you are not currently forwarding messages but would like to, here's what to do:

If you are not currently using a desktop client but would like to, here's what to do:

  • First, decide whether you want to use POP or IMAP.

  • Next, configure your client: Mailshell provides step-by-step instructions for common clients using both POP or IMAP.

  • Finally, change your delivery settings to save in folders. If you are using POP, you will need to save everything in your Inbox because POP will only download messages from that folder. If you are using IMAP, you can choose to save in as many different folders as you like.

How do I use a desktop client (such as Outlook) to send and receive email?

Mailshell's Premium Service lets you check your email with any POP- or IMAP-capable email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, etc.) and send email with Mailshell's SMTP server. To learn more, click here.

Please note that if you use Mailshell's SMTP server, you must set your client to allow authentication, and that currently you cannot use this server with Eudora. If you use Eudora, please use your ISP's SMTP server instead.

My email address has changed and I want to get my email at that address. What do I do?

All you need to do is change your forwarding address. If you have the free trial service, here's what to do:

  • Go to the Forwarding Addresses page in the Address Book section of Check Mail.

  • Enter your new email address in the field provided and click the "Add" button.

  • Verify the address.

  • Once it is verified, use the buttons on the left side of your forwarding addresses list to select the new address and click the "Select Active" button.

All forwarded messages, including password changes and new message alerts, will now be sent to the selected address. If you like, you can delete the old address by clicking the "delete" link for that address.

If you have the Premium Service, you can select a different forwarding address for each Mailshell address. Here's what to do:

  • Follow the steps above to add a new address. Premium users do not need to verify new forwarding addresses.

  • Once it has been added, it will appear in all the appropriate delivery menus throughout the site. Simply change your delivery settings to whatever you want.

If I reply to a message received at a forwarding address, will my address still be protected?

By default, your address will not be protected. You can, however, turn on the Email Address Redirection feature--when that feature is turned on, Mailshell automatically redirects your message so that when the recipient receives it, it appears to come from the appropriate Mailshell address. (For example, if you receive an email at your Yahoo! account that has been forwarded through the disposable email address family@your-name.com, when you reply, the recipient will see the message as coming from family@your-name.com rather than the Yahoo! address.)

If you do not want to have this feature on, you can also protect the address yourself by using the remote compose format.

Please note: Even with Redirection turned on, your email address will not be protected if it is included in the body of your email. The best policy is not to include your real email address within the message body and be aware of whether you haveany automatic signatures or features that include the address.
