Approved Senders

What are Approved Senders?

Approved Senders are senders that will never be filtered as junk. Think of them as your VIPs: friends, family, newsletters you subscribe to, and other senders you expect email from. By specifying these senders as approved, you ensure that their messages are always delivered properly.

Approved Senders can be either email addresses (e.g., joe@yahoo.com) or domains (e.g., yahoo.com). You can add and delete senders from your list in the Approved Senders section of Spam Filtering. (Note that your Address Book contacts are also treated as Approved Senders.)

If you are auto-forwarding an existing email account to a Mailshell address in order to filter messages for that account, you should also list the address you're forwarding from as an Approved Sender. Because the Spam Catcher normally penalizes messages that aren't addressed directly to the Mailshell address that receives them, messages that are simply auto-forwarded are more likely to be filtered out as spam even if they aren't. By adding the address you're forwarding to this list, the Spam Catcher won't apply that penalty and will be able to assess the messages more accurately.

Why would I want to maintain an Approved Senders list?

Depending on your Spam Catcher strength, some non-spam messages may occasionally be identified as spam even though they are not. By listing Approved Senders--friends, family, colleagues, newsletters you subscribe to, and anyone else who emails you regularly--you ensure that their messages are always delivered properly.

How do I add an address or domain to my Approved Senders list?

There are two ways to add Approved Senders:

  • Go to the Approved Senders section of Spam Filtering and enter the sender into the field provided, then click the "Add" button. You can specify either an email address (e.g., joe@yahoo.com) or a domain (e.g., yahoo.com). If you specify a domain, any address sending from that domain will be approved.

  • If a non-spam message is inadvertently sent to your Junk folder, select the message from within that folder and click the "Not Junk" button. The message will go to your Inbox and the sender will be automatically added to your Approved Senders list.

Note that your Address Book contacts are also treated as Approved Senders.

How do I remove an address or domain from my Approved Senders list?

To remove Approved Senders from your list, go to the Approved Senders section of Spam Filtering and select the senders you wish to remove, then click the "Delete" button.
